Aquatics Center Renovation

A long-awaited update

We are excited to announce our upcoming Aquatics Center renovations, including extensive modifications to the pool deck, a complete re-plastering of the pool and whirlpool, and installation of state-of-the-art filter, gutter, and draining systems.

Beginning December 17th, the pool, whirlpool, and sauna will be closed for approximately 3-4 months in order to complete this critical work. We will provide you progress reports throughout the duration of the project, including the approximate date for reopening.

The Aquatics Center renovations – the first in 30 years – will provide the JCC a beautiful and refreshed space for our children, members, and staff. Once complete, the renovation will ensure that we are able to serve every family, every day, for many years to come.

Within the next couple of weeks, Aquatics Director, Patty Smith Neidigh, and Assistant Aquatics Director, Teresa Casolo, along with both the fitness and aquatics teams, will provide you a wide variety of exercise options, including “land” classes (our typical water fitness classes facilitated throughout the building, just not in the pool), social engagement groups, and special themed events.

Learn more about the renovations, including ongoing updates regarding our progress here. Also, please join us January 3rd to sample an assortment of classes and social programming that may fit your needs (more information to come).

What does this mean for our community?

The York community relies on the JCC Aquatics Center to provide high-quality facilities for swimming instruction, community wellness, group fitness classes, social engagements, relaxation activities, open swim, and play. The renovation will ensure that we can enhance and continue to provide these valuable services.

A Brand New Facility

In a few months, our Aquatics Center will look brand new.

  • Extensive modifications to the pool deck
  • Complete re-plastering of the pool and whirlpool
  • State-of-the-art filter, gutter, and draining systems
  • New ladders, lane lines, and backstroke flags
  • New steps to enter the pool
  • New lighting in the pool area

The aesthetic updates alone are very exciting. However, after consulting with engineers and advisors, we’ve determined that these renovations are also essential to maintain the structural integrity of the facility. The JCC has committed approximately $1 million to ensure that we can continue to offer a high-quality facility and programming. The renovations will complete the enhancement of the four major areas of the building — the Early Childhood Education Wing, the Fitness Center, the Lobby, and now the Aquatics Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When will the pool renovations begin?
  • December 17 – the Aquatics Center (including pool, whirlpool, and saunas) will be closed for approximately 3-4 months

  • When will the Aquatics Center reopen?
  • We expect to reopen the Aquatics Center in approximately 3-4 months.

  • Why now?
  • The JCC pool, which has been in operation for 30+ years, continues to function with its original equipment. Not only is the pool equipment in need of replacement, today’s technology will benefit us in a number of ways:

    • The new, state-of-the-art UV filtration system will eliminate bacteria, which will reduce the amount of chlorine and improve the water quality
    • Remote monitoring of pool chemicals will allow us to easily check and maintain consistent chemicals, water levels, and temperature
    • The filtration system’s variable-speed motor can be adjusted based on pool usage (time of day, building closures, etc.), allowing us to be more environmentally conscious
  • Will you still offer fitness classes?
  • Yes. Please visit the JCC Fitness Center and Aquatics pages for information about the programs we will offer. The JCC has always provided fitness classes for all ages and abilities, and while some aquatics-related programs will continue as “land” classes, other programming will be suspended during the Aquatics Center closure.
